Writing nonfiction helps students to build their knowledge of the natural and social world, understand those worlds more fully and share their expertise with an audience. Giving students the opportunity to write nonfiction allows students to ask questions and learn about their interests. Teaching nonfiction in an engaging and effective way is critical as this type of text provides the key to success in later schooling as well as on high-stakes tests. This seminar will discuss the need for nonfiction writing in our classrooms as well as the best ways to present nonfiction writing strategies that make sense to our students as well as excite them. As stated in the common core standards, mini lessons will be developed to teach students how to, “introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section” along with many others to show students how to write informative/explanatory texts.
